It's a bit difficult to know what to say about George Lloyd - he himself says, "Although I no longer attend my church I am very much a believer," and here he has set the words of the ancient liturgy for Catholic Mass to music. Apparently he was able to square the words of the historic Christian faith to his own beliefs. Lloyd's music tends towards a very English and romantic style reminiscent of Elgar and in this he resembles John Rutter. The difference being that Rutter has faith, Lloyd appears to have little, if any. As a result we have a symphonic and choral setting of the Latin Mass, but one with little spiritual insight. Disappointing in the extreme.
