You can't help but like him. Rez's frontman writes with characteristic energy, candour and warmth in this short set of poems. They are fragmented, marginal, personal responses to anything and everything -communism, abortion, media, grace - delivered with the passion of a prophet. He's probably right to say in his introduction that he's "prosaic as opposed to poetic", but now and then he really comes up with the goods. "Accuser Of The Brethren" contains this chilling little interrogation sequence: "Aaah your family - the pictures are right here. Yes, lovely/quite lovely aren't they? Lots of time..." And in "Tonight I Took Communion", "Feeling chose not to attend/I sent Fiction, Feeling's friend." This book is an extract from the diary of someone who's in the world but will be damned if he's going to wind up being of it. OK, they won't be marking out a plot in Poet's Corner for him, but what the heck? After all, it's not his day job.
