Five male songsters, contemporary in approach, but soaked in the hard-edged traditional gospel quartet sound. The sleeve notes include commendations from Robert Cray, several of whose band play on the album, and Huey Lewis, who used the Hummingbirds on a recent album. The group display expertise in all vocal departments, in their ability to drive a song all the way to the take-off point, in their spot on harmonies, and powerful communication of both music and message. Highlights include the rocking, aggressive "Here I Am" and "Ain't Nobody's Business", and the jazzy "Safety Zone", which sounds like a Take 6 special. The old chestnut "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" exhibits incredible vocal gymnastics even beyond the Twickers crowd's ability. Huey Lewis sums it up well. "Anyone who digs rock, blues or R&B will love this album." That's me, and I do.
