The latest release from the Govan Citadel Songsters sees the Glasgow-based choir build upon the acclaim it has been rightfully given in recent years. Clear in its aim to preach Christ, this album contains a generous 18 helpings of polished group singing whilst refreshingly avoiding the temptation to cover over-compiled worship classics. Instead, the Songsters have chosen to delve deep into the rich heritage of hymnal music with versions of Fanny Crosby's "To God Be The Glory" and Joseph Henry Gilmore's "He Leadeth Me" whilst making sure that more recent numbers such as Ron Kenoly's "Hallowed Be Your Name" sit well amongst their veteran counterparts. To add variety, soloists Matt Ramsay and Moira Wilson get the chance to shine in "Arms Open Wide" and "Nothing But The Blood" respectively and choir leader Chic Ramsay is not afraid to occasionally take his team out of their more pedestrian-paced comfort zone as evidenced in the likes of the upbeat "Great, Great Morning" and an accomplished stab at black gospel in "Praise His Holy Name!" More care could have been taken to bring the somewhat distant backing of piano, bass and drums up to the same high production standards as that of the vocalists but this small niggle does not take away from the overall enjoyment of a fine release from one of Scotland's premier choirs.
