As brass bands go, you can't really get better than the Grimethorpe Colliery Band and it is pleasing to hear on this CD that their reputation as one of the best remains solidly intact. This vibrant album kicks off with a wonderfully anthemic and rousing rendition of "For All the Saints" before demonstrating their versatility with the starkly contrasting "In Perfect Peace". More contemporary tunes are featured too, such as Kendrick's "Shine Jesus Shine", which translates extremely well into this setting, and "As The Deer". "St Clements" or rather "The Day Thou Gavest Lord Is Ended" is a fitting way to draw things to a close. I know brass bands aren't everyone's cup of tea, and this album may or may not have a wider appeal, but this is a good collection, well performed and conducted and is a strong advocate for the genre.
