Released some months back when Alliance Music were marketing Gotee in the UK but only now has your fave mag got their hands on a copy. Glad we bothered for this is every bit as good as Christian hip-hop's favourite sons' previous releases ('Mental Release', 1995; 'Factors Of The Seven', 1997; 'Grammatical Revolution', 1999 - in case you missed them). Coffee and Bonafide as usual transcend the stifling formulaic patterns of much low-budget hip-hop and fuse funk, rock and vintage soul music into their mix though this time out there are less of those vibey Coltraine-esque jazz touches which transfixed us in the past. Some tasty cameos here from dc Talk's TobyMac, fellow Gotee rapper Knowdaverbs and, most unexpected of all, acoustic rock chick Jennifer Knapp while their use of serious phat bass ensure this wrinkled funkster is kept happy. Boldly confronting issues like pornography's degradation of women ("Video Girl") and the lyrical banality of mainstream rap ("Seriously") while the insidiously hypnotic "Believe" will win over any floating voter.
