For all the hard-core, EMO and post-punk bands that seemed to have flooded the hard music scene so far this decade, there are still those who refuse to be swayed by such modern trends, opting for a more classic metal edge to their art. One of the few who manage to pull it off are Impellitteri and friends, as 'Eye Of The Hurricane' aptly demonstrates. Impellitteri's fourth album to date sees the return of Rob Rock (vocals), James Amellio-Pulli (bass), Edward Harris-Roth (keys) and Ken Mary (drums); the same-line up that brought us 'Screaming Symphony' in '96. Produced by Chris Impellitteri himself, this contains some superb speed metal of the highest calibre, complete with enticing rhythms and complex time changes as well as awe-inspiring riffs at the hands of Chris, giving the band enough scope with which to demonstrate their skills, both individually and collectively. Lyrically, Rob remains focused upon communicating spiritual truth, intelligently challenging the listener to rethink a number of issues and pre-conceived notions concerning eternal matters and life found in Christ alone. Although predictability may somewhat taint Impellitteri's sound, 'Eye Of The Hurricane' contains far more diversity sonically speaking than 'Screaming Symphony', provoking an element of suspense throughout the project which is both enthralling and compelling. Thoroughly recommended for metal die-hards.
