Southern Gospel's a strange beast to observe from a distance. It seems smothered in insecurity, cultural blind alleys and career opportunities, the worst side of Uncle Sam's glitzy showbiz version of Christianity. Lyrics are usually so trite as to almost be a parody, very amusing if you have an offbeat sense of humour. God probably laughs when He hears it. Or cries. J.D. & Co are giants of the genre. They toured and recorded with Elvis and have a mega standing, or as they would say Stateside are "one of the most beloved gospel groups of all time." Main features the superlative deep bass voice of ole J.D. himself, like Ivan Rebroff with a sore throat. Got to admit I love it even though it's a real "show-off" style of vocalising. As a sucker for harmony singing I can also warm to the Stamps expertise, though 'Victory Road' wavers on the brink of the usual Southern Gospel pitfalls, sheer skill and expertise, with backing from some fine Nashville country session musicians pulls it through. Good quality from leaders in the field.
