In the pre-release publicity, John Drury writes, “I believe this offers something different and adds to what is currently available on the Christian music scene.” He is probably right; the music here comes from a folk tradition that is under represented in Christian music at present. Most of the songs are inspired by Scripture, including several Psalms and a setting of the Lord’s prayer. The words of other songs celebrate God with us now, the beauty of creation and the healing presence of God. The lyrics are well written, mostly reflective in tone, and are complemented well by the music. Sometimes the music lacks a distinctive melody and seems to meander along without direction (as on a setting of 1 Corinthians 13) but at other times the melody is more memorable. John’s voice is distinctive and very reminiscent of Ralph McTell of “Streets Of London” fame. I don’t think this CD is going set the world alight, but it contains some good songs. For those who like their music thoughtful, it will make for good listening, and it may be a useful for resource for leading in reflective worship.
