This magnificent collection begins and ends with pieces that have royal connections. The opening track took Tavener’s music to a worldwide audience, his “Song For Athene” that was included in the funeral of Princess Diana. The closing work was written in memory of the Queen Mother: “Elizabeth Full Of Grace”. Both are sung by the Holst Singers and the vocal quality could not be better. “Elizabeth” will not disappoint Tavener collectors who may have most of the music on this album. The use of a temple bell reminds us that she was the last Empress of India and the melody is one that echoes in the memory long after the work has ended. The other new piece is from 'The Veil Of The Temple', a seven hour marathon first performed as an overnight vigil in June 2003. The excerpt on this disc, “What God is we do not know”, is the first recording of any part of it and leaves us eager to hear more. The rest of this collection are excellent new recordings of the best of Tavener and make a good starting point for new listeners. Tavener’s early settings of poems by Blake, “The Tyger” and “The Lamb” are here; there is an appetiser from 'The Protecting Veil' featuring Natalie Clein on cello; and much else of interest.
