The former Righteous Brothers backing muso presents a new album in the Acoustic Worship series designed to "capture the intimate dynamic of a small group worshipping." To translate into non-hype, you get a bunch of old songs redone with a piano or guitar backing and Wimber and friends singing. Vineyard are renowned for their laid back style but this is so horizontal in style that it jars the ears and induces sleep. Sad because there are some good songs - "It's Your Blood", "I Just Want To Praise You" and "Spirit Song" are all 24 carat classics but these versions demonstrate a process of musical reverse alchemy, taking gold songs and turning out leaden versions. A close listen reveals that the singing is shoddy and Wimber's timing is way, way out. Don't believe me? Check out the intro of "To Seek Your Face". Throughout the whole album. Wimber sounds like he's struggling to keep up with the small choir. I'm left feeling sad because a release like this does not honour a fine church leader and songwriter whose past achievements don't deserve to be undermined by an album that should never have seen the light of day. Someone at Vineyard quality control needs to see an ear doctor!
