Jonathan is, of course, best known as the keyboardist for rock superstars Journey. Many of his original solo tracks were written on the road whilst touring with Journey back in summer 2016 and a debut solo album 'What God Wants To Hear' was released. Whilst continuing to be busy touring with Journey, the release of 'Unsung Noel' sees Cain compile a new set of songs focused on the true story of Christmas. Along with 10 original songs, the project also includes three traditional Christmas songs and a cover of Matt Redman's worship song "Light Of The World". As you might expect there are plenty of keys here and plenty that would appeal to the Journey fan but Cain certainly takes the opportunity of going solo to experiment with some different influences and sounds. The layers of synth sounds used throughout help to build atmosphere and blend well with drum beats, punchy bass lines and some good vocals from Jonathan. There are choral vocals on "Emmanuel" and the renditions of carol evergreens "Angels We Have Heard On High", "Oh Holy Night" and "Do You Hear What I Hear". Whilst having one foot in the traditional, this record also draws on the modern with the electronic sounds and soft breaks of "It's Only Christmas When" and "Hail Mary". The Journey influence is also present, bringing in electric guitar to add extra punch on "You Came To Reign". There is no doubting Jonathan Cain is an exceptional songwriter and this record proves to be one of the strongest Christmas releases of the season.
