A sixth recording from Rugby-based worship leader Jonny Shepherd and I love the way this talented songsmith fuses EDM, pop rock and a worshipful vibe into something memorable and stirring. Not congregational worship in the accepted idea of such yet the songs on 'Wake Up' often have a psalm-like quality that stirs the heart. "When The Waters Rise" sets the tone moving from groove to ambient sounds in one track. The moving, prophetic "Don't Sleep" stands out and samples Rugby-based church leader Alan Scotland whilst "Wake Up" is catchy and the closing "Whom The Son Sets Free" matches lyrics and creativity to express freedom. In a world of so much colour-by-numbers worship music, I love the freedom on this EP, the adventurous ideas and the way in which Shepherd matches lyrical ideas with fresh music. Instead of the usual guitar, bass and drums arrangements, here's something that pushes the envelope.
