This album from a British act suffers from an identity crisis. It is both Christian and secular; pop-rock and urban-rap. Unfortunately this leads to a very disjointed listening experience. I like variety in albums, but this is more like a mix-tape, jumping from style to style with varying degrees of success. In some respects, the secular songs work better, with "Working" in particular coming off in a kitschy-style reminiscent of '90s indie band Elastica. However, I found the lyrics to "I Don't Want You" to be somewhat troubling for a Christian artist when she sings "I detest you". Granted the song is about a woman who has been cheated on repeatedly by her partner, but I don't agree with that sentiment being expressed on this kind of album. I also struggled with the lyrics to the Christian songs. The sentiments expressed I completely agree with, in terms of warning about the dangers of pre-marital sex, spiritism, anger and more. The delivery is lacking though; is "Fornication ain't right" really the best way to connect with today's youth? The insipid R&B of "Happy Are Those", the bland pop of "Lady In Darkness" and the militaristic overture of "Armageddon" display perfectly KatBGhini can utilise a myriad of genres but have mastered none. Better lyrics, more focus and better quality control would have enhanced this album greatly, but as it stands it is pretty poor fare.

Well being the singer of KatBGhini I totally disagree with your review Graeme. Not sure how long ago you wrote this but who said you have to be stuck to one genre? And being a Christian yourself I presume (I studied the bible for 6+ years as well)) wouldn't be so judgemental ??? I like to be different and bring a difference into the industry... You will find prince, Lisa Stansfield, sinead o Connor etc etc many famous artists have written songs for other famous artists of different genres... I myself write all my own but why give them to someone else?? GOD didn't say you have to do this?? There's a lot of different religions all read from the same book yet have different interpretations ??? Ummm are you following me on this? But one thing they all know is not to judge. If you are a Christian reviewing for Cross Rhythms maybe word your reviews differently and as a Christian.
In the Old Testament God didn't like certain people that did wrong he sent that back to the dust.
Also if I was a youth and didn't know what fornication meant I'd look it up in the dictionary.
So on and so forth.
I am preaching the bible through song.
