The Dutch worship leader's third album, originally released in 2008, showcases an unassuming songwriting talent to watch out for. Kees' vocal delivery is strong and the lyrics are Biblical and sharp - there's rarely a wasted word. While the majority of the tracks are intimate worship songs, many of them would cross over to work in a congregational setting. The production is great with much variety of instrumentation and plenty of dynamic atmospherics ensuring that the stadium sized choruses sound big while the mellower moments are sensitively handled and avoid any hint of heavy handedness. One gets the impression that despite sharing songwriting duties here with heavyweights like Aaron Keys, Chris Eaton, Graham Kendrick and Noel Richards, the album is firmly focused on worshipping Jesus. Any downsides? There's the occasional cheesy moment and in no sense is the sound groundbreaking. But, as a well-crafted selection of modern worship songs, 'Letting Go' does what it sets out to do and does it well.
