Old rockers don't die, they don't retire, they explore roots music. Though to be fair as members of The Lost Dogs, Derri Daugherty and Mike Roe have been doing this for quite a while. Now as Kerosene Halo, their self-titled debut project is beautifully recorded and offers a selection of other people's songs delightfully delivered. The interplay between their voices suits this selection and there are plenty of standouts. The Leonard Cohen song "That's No Way To Say Goodbye" is gorgeous and their cover of Larry Norman's "The Outlaw" is a reminder of what a fine song it is. Phil Madeira's songwriting pops up three times and reminds us what an underappreciated musician and songwriter he is. The unplugged vibe of this really works and the evocative creative songwriting is something to be savoured slowly like a fine whiskey. It improves with every listen.
