Remix albums do one of two things, they enliven dull tracks or they ruin good ones. And as "You Don't Know" is, in my book, a stone classic and one of the best R&B gospel tracks for years, noting on the sleeve that Carlin 'Godson' Mukkular had made a rock remake of said classic hardly filled me with expectation. In fact Carlin's "The Godson Roc Joint" remix brings an unexpected rock-edge vibrancy to Kiki's hit. Some of the other remixes are less effective, "Sweetest Thing" and "Let Go" come and go without any discernable improvement on the originals. But what remixers Paul Boutte and Brother Wilson do on their "Ol' Skool Quiet Storm Remix" of "All I Am" shows again how deliciously soulful Kiki is. Another plus is that this nine-song set includes a bonus track, "That Thing", not featured on that wonderful 'I Owe You' album. So all in all, this remix filler of release schedules will do until the teenage diva is ready to unleash another set of sassy recastings of the ol' gospel sound.
