Well, I'm in quite a dilemma here! I've been a staunch fan of King's X ever since I clapped ears on 'Gretschen Goes To Nebraska' and I've been joined by many musicians. The trademark bass riffs and harmonies have been plagiarised (or should I say "paid tribute to") by many bands, both secular and CCM. However, it's their trademark that is the problem. Despite reports that this album would be psychedelic rock, I have to say it sounds much like their previous works. What sounded startlingly fresh and original once is now old hat and leaves Doug, Ty and Jerry wide open to accusations of being a one trick pony. I suspect others who are familiar with their earlier work will also suffer a sense of deja vu. Rumours have circulated that this could well be the last release by the band, particularly if it fails to bring greater commercial success than 'Dogman', etc. My initial dismay has transformed into a suspicion that maybe they do need to break up, or at least change the line up, to force a rethink and put them back at the vanguard. There are good songs here, and some of the most personal lyrics I have heard in hard rock and any newcomers will no doubt be impressed. However, old hands like myself will probably long for today's manna.
