That's a bit harsh, I thought as I read the Cross Rhythms review of Lisa Bevill's last album. It seemed to me that the reviewer hadn't given it sufficient playing time to discover its hidden depths. So when I found myself feeling rather disappointed after one hearing of Lisa's new album I decided to take my own advice and give it a few more plays. The result was still a sense of something lacking. Don't get me wrong, this is a classy album with production and vocal arrangements that are smoother than a Damon Hill gear change; and Lisa's voice has gained a power and versatility that finally answers her Amy-clone accusers. Many of the tracks are soulful ballads with a stripped down sound that highlights the strength of her singing while encouraging the listener with their feel good lyrics - the stand out being "If We're His". But for this reviewer the best cuts are the funkier numbers such as "Happiness", "Turn And Love" and "Changed", the latter employing a full horn section. The trio of producers (David Pack, Don Koch and Jimmie Lee Sloas) have come up with a shiny, comfortable album that brings much pleasure but one that, for me, could do with a few darker, more searching moments both in the musical and lyrical department.
