I can’t quite figure why this excellent release hasn’t been picked up for UK bookshop distribution particularly as this troubadour from South Africa undertook a British tour in May. Louis has a husky, expressive voice which, with its little swoops of falsetto, makes it easy-on-the-ear over crisp, punchy production by Mauritz Lotz. What makes Louis stand out from the crowd is his way with a lyric. For instance, the opener “I’ll Give You Life” gently critiques those who never get beyond the art of Christian music to find the life behind it (“You ask for rhythm, a groove that you can move to/You’ll have to settle for the drummer in this band/Now while I reckon it’s good things that you ask for/There’s just this one thing that you should understand/There’s always more that God would have to offer.” 12 songs, two of them in Afrikaans, and a fresh and engaging talent.
