British listeners may have seen Madison at the annual Creation Fest in Cornwall, where she performs regularly with her father in The Scott Cunningham Band. This is Madison's debut album and the 11 self-penned songs feature her clear voice - warm but always delicately controlled; a joy to hear. The soundscape behind her is interesting; rich and multi-layered from talented professional musicians, but always leaving room for the vocals to shine. Her lyrics are down-to-earth in sentiment but off-beat in construction with unusual line lengths and few rhymes. She says, "This is basically my life, put to music. I want to be honest, no matter what form of writing I take." The title track is about searching for a real, authentic relationship with the Lord and is just Madison on acoustic guitar. She doesn't need a backing band to capture an audience. It's a delicate song, but bold enough to go to new places in chord progression. I love the groove of "Feelings" with its cool electric guitar solo and catchy chorus. "Fugitive" has challenging and penetrating lyrics and "Seated With Sinners" has a more funky sound; the words unusually spoken by Jesus. The album is produced by Tyler Chester and those festival-goers who have already been captured by Madison's haunting voice will want to search out this 2014 album.
