Matt is a singer/songwriter in his mid-20s from Birmingham who's been gigging in the Midlands for over eight years, also performing in various music festivals and even completing a mini-US tour in 2006. This curiously titled set is his third album of original songs to date, though he's also released a Springsteen tribute album featuring songs from the Boss with a distinct Tyler twist! Released on his own Dannyboy Music label, 'No Lifeguard Required' features 10 self-penned songs reflecting personal thoughts and experiences, with titles such as "When The Winter Came", "She Clicks Her Heels" and 'Cry Of The Wolf". Several tracks, notably the opening "Heartbreaking", deal with the tricky area of romantic relations. None of Matt's songs seem to speak of his own Catholic faith. Matt carries strong vocal prowess, a bold, punchy sound that demands attention. His competence as a musician is revealed in the fact that these is a totally acoustic set, featuring nothing more than Tyler on lead vocals and guitar, along with male backing vocals. He's a good songwriter, delivering some catchy tunes, though I feel he would be more impressive in a live performance or recording with a full band. Still, well worth a listen.
