This live album from the septuagenarian gospel diva was originally released in the States in 2008 but earlier this year 'Hope At The Hideout' received welcome UK Christian retail distribution through Kingsway. As anyone who witnessed Mavis' masterful 2011 Greenbelt performance will testify, this great grandmother has one of the most powerful and soulful voices in Christendom and certainly knows how to put on a live show. Mavis opens this set, recorded in June 2008 at Chicago's intimate Hideout venue, with the promise, "We've come here tonight to bring you some joy, some happiness, inspiration and some positive vibrations!" and over the course of the 13 tracks here, that's exactly what she does. Opening with a grooving version of Crosby, Stills & Nash's "For What It's Worth" Mavis is on fine form and it's immediately obvious what a high quality band she has assembled in recent years. Sister Yvonne is one of the trio of backing vocalists who do a great job but special mention must go to guitarist Rick Holmstrom whose deliciously funky licks delight throughout. Standout moments from an inspired set are a passionate "We Shall Not Be Moved", a compelling "Freedom Highway" and a truly original take on Sunday school classic "This Little Light". If you're not fortunate enough to have seen this gospel great play live, or even if you have, then 'Hope At The Hideout' is absolutely essential.
