This debut EP from Dallas old-school metallers Messengers is a terrifically chuggy affair, and that's no bad thing when the chunky riffery sets the head nodding and feet stamping in the way this does. It's a throwback to '80s heyday thrash and hardcore, evoking the sweaty pit desperation of Cro Mags with simple riffs, loads of dark chord changes and the aforementioned chug-chug-chugging. It's not that Messengers are pushing the envelope here, but what they have created is a sound that immediately made this reviewer want to experience their live show and experience these brooding chords and breakneck thrash sections in their live glory. Apart from the distinctly throwaway feel of "Domicile", every other tune on this EP has some stand out moments. "Palerose" is wonderfully brutal and essential sounding, with the equally awesome "Judge" firing riffs out of a cannon into the area of your brain reserved for remembering things. The vocals are also worthy of mention, since they are rather excellent, adding a marvellous air of urgency to proceedings, spitting out venomous lyrics that are easily shouted along with to encourage crowd participation. A fine EP with much to shout about!
