New York-based Mike may have come to your attention through the Christian prog rock sampler 'CPR Vol 3'. He is a keyboard player who has worked with a number of bands over the years, years that he describes as "frustrating and disappointing". 2006 saw him take the plunge to record this album in his own studio, taking full responsibility for composition and production and all the vocal duties, backed by Bill Thomas on guitars, Dave Bailey on bass and Steve Golden on drums. The resultant disc is impressive, presenting Florio's favoured music - progressive and classic rock. The sound is generally very reminiscent of Kansas, with a vocal delivery hovering somewhere between Steve Walsh or Greg X Volz, generally very strong, and only occasionally not quite hitting the mark. Standout track is "Fractured" with a truly Kansas-ish keyboard intro and middle section, but a driving keyboard led rock sound recalling late '70s Genesis. The lengthy "Paradise Of Stone" showcases some excellent keyboard work and the guitar and rhythm section are strong throughout. A new album is in the pipeline (a song from which was featured on 'CPR Vol 3'), which should be well worth investigation. In the meantime check this one out.
