Mike Keenan is a prolific Catholic layman of deep faith who has released eight CDs since 1996, seven since 2001, and there will be another one out before you read this. The musical style is much of what you would expect from an Irish folk base, tinged with country. The arrangements are similar to those deployed by Mary Black but the sentiments are closer to Daniel O'Donnell. The lyrics are sincere and occasionally clunky but can be moving: "Joseph's Journey" successfully imagines the man's inner feelings on the way to Bethlehem. This will appeal to those who like a gentle MOR take on roots music but is unlikely to attract people of other tastes.
