Birmingham-based R&B singer Monique Thomas presents a debut album designed to introduce us to her talents as both a songwriter and a singer. Bathed in a glossy contemporary production courtesy of the guys from the 5am production team, this is a strong debut with plenty of highlights. Written and recorded at the time Monique was getting married, perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that there's a bit of romance captured here. "This Ring" is probably the best example and there's the challenging "What A Woman Needs" which is proving to be a hit with the sisters! The first single "Colourful" has been a turntable hit on Cross Rhythms Radio but after that, there isn't an obvious follow up and this is probably my only criticism. Other highlights are "Unbroken" which was penned for her by producer Tony Bean and "Daughter Shine" inspired by the words and life of a friend/mentor in her church. The pinkness of the cover art and the female focus of much of the songwriting might not make this the easiest of albums for the guys but one thing is for sure, Monique has plenty to say and is passionate about communicating with her audience. The material isn't obviously "gospel" but Monique weaves a message of faith into a selection of songs that examine relationships, make social commentary and encourage the downcast. If she can create a momentum and record more albums in the future, she has every chance of becoming one of the UK's most successful gospel/R&B artists. No doubt, this is a great start.
