Award-winning gospel group (or if you like, small choir) New Direction were founded in Chicago in 1994 by former chemical plant worker Jeral Gray, Snr as a means of getting young people off the streets of his hometown. 'Destiny' is the group's fifth project and guarantees to put a smile on your face through its thoroughly energetic combination of gospel harmonies, R&B rhythms, hip-hop interludes and soulful ballads. Mid-tempo numbers such as the opening title track, "Start All Over Again" and "Wait On Him" expose exciting solo vocals and some R&B riffs that would not be out of place in the Billboard Top 50. Traditionalists will appreciate high octane and slightly frantic tracks such as "Heaven" and "God Is Worthy"; close your eyes and you could just be in a South American gospel hall. The second half of the album offers some slower paced gems led by a beautiful range of solid male vocals; the introductory guitar accompaniment to "Mighty Is The Lord" is a pleasant surprise. You will have just caught your breath before the last two tracks kick in and you find yourself on your feet again. This is an album with something for everyone and this is music you simply cannot sit still to.
