The Americans have never forgiven us for two things in music: The Beatles and punk. Two years after the English punk revolution, having missed out on the joy of hearing Johnny Rotten distorted through speakers wrapped up with sellotape, they started trying to reproduce the sound in billion dollar studios. Never did work. Ten years later the American Christian muso business, always eager to cash in on fashion, has itself discovered punk. And, for once at least, this time lag has given them the edge. Anyone who heard Undercover when they came to Greenbelt will surely agree. Now Nobody Special are following in their unmistakeable footsteps. So let us ignore cringable cover of "What's The Buzz" (from J.C. Superstar) and turn up the volume on this, Mr Nobody's second ignoble album. They have avoided all the pitfalls. There is only one typical American guitar riff, and there are no "I love you whoever you are up in the sky" lyrics. "Once One Nation" is directed straight at those in power. This is Christian music from underneath. There's good jibe at the anti-rock brigade. Best of all is "Weirdo", and I quote: "Have some kids made, make sure the valium's got childproof lids." "Those Who Look" is pure Undercover. All with venom and speed, and very Scriptural. They even finish off with a dose of acoustic country blues. Well what more can one ask for! It's still not the Clash, but it's one for those who see through all the rest.
