Intriguingly the whole of Nashville's CCM scene seems to be dusting off their hymnals - Amy Grant and Jars Of Clay have also recently released hymns albums. Now the Kimmey sisters, known for their slinky gospel R&B, offer their interpretations of some much loved (and a couple of obscure) hymns. The delicious harmonies and switched leads are still there but now, instead of the funky bass lines and sassy brass sections we've got some surprisingly diverse arrangements taking in pop rock ("Fairest Lord Jesus") and a more trad gospel sound ("Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise"). Not surprisingly, the girls are most effective on a song that lends itself, in a light R&B treatment, to a style not dissimilar to previous recordings. Not all the arrangements work here and it's rather telling that it's the two originals, "Vision Of Love" and "Have Mercy", which stand out. Also worth a listen is the bombastically orchestrated "Praise To The Lord The Almighty" on which Tree63's singer John Ellis joins Lisa, Danielle and Andrea. To sum up, an album of some class though regular OOE fans should approach with caution.
