Poulton has a style all his own, his casual, half-spoken vocals delivered over a funky, low-key rhythm and blues guitar. It's playful, life-affirming and there was obviously a lot of jamming in the studio. Like all music made that way, not everything works. There's some particularly ill-advised bhangra hollering in the background of one song. Lyrically, the songs are far ranging and full of little observations, some serious, some not. At times things veer into cheesy Christian territory, like the line "Jesus put a smile on my face" on "I Never Knew", but it's impossible to tell whether Poulton is satirising or embracing the cheesiness, and he carries it off with a folky charm and a disarming refusal to take himself seriously.
