Singer/songwriter Poulton's seventh release is an impressive collection. Two adjectives come to mind: "modern" and "groovy". "Angel" ploughs a funky blues-rock furrow, tight but not flashy, upbeat and fun; you can almost hear Nic Burrows (drums), Chris Smith (keyboards) and producer Paul (guitars) grinning as they groove! Lyrically, Poulton's quirky humour ("Abraham gave a meal to his angels/I wondered, should I offer mine some toast?") helps get his points across. Whether addressing integrity ("Doctor Spin"), unity ("Ordinary") or walking the talk ("I Can Preach It", a US radio hit), for Paul the message, not the punchline, takes priority. A mature, accomplished set.
