Better known for his work with the 77s and Lost Dogs, Mike Roe also produces (and on this album plays bass and guitar) Perry And The Poor Boys, the team led by singer/songwriter Perry Springman. Along with Magnus Sjolander (drums) and Jon Anderson (guitar) the band create sometimes intense, sometimes laid back pop/rock. Similarities with REM abound - jangly guitars, quirky melodies, stirring harmonies - with the title track almost a "Near Wild Heaven" rip off. But there are also elements of grunge ("The Singer") and folk ("St Augustine"). With most songs reaching the five minute mark, Springman's vocals are placed on a backcloth that weaves acoustic and electric guitars unpredictably. Lyrics contain observations on life, love and grace that, while lacking the insight of the Vigilantes Of Love's Bill Mallonnee, still haunt and move. The band are best at creating .atmospheric tracks such as "The Heaven" - an unearthly love song with a spine-tingling guitar hook. One of those albums in which you find something new with each play.
