Few guitarists can create images with their music. Phil Keaggy docs! Country scenes, walks, homely log fires combined with family and childhood memories. A cry, a laugh and a pause for thought could be an appropriate description of this latest venture from a man whose talent always seems to reach new heights. Opening with a tune that completely changes into something else (hence the title "Metamorphosis"), the album progresses smoothly. The first few tracks form a prelude to the whole album in a way which makes them complement each other. Definitely relaxing, yet some of the nicest acoustic Keaggy stuff you've heard, unless you've seen him play live. Not to discredit "Beyond Nature", this has a looser feel and incorporates some dazzling speed runs. The album is strangely haunting in places, crisp, melodic and fun. The track "Paka" sounds like grandad's old car, chugging over the hill. For those who know "Ph'lip Side", an acoustic version of "Spend My Life With You" peaks the whole thing in my opinion. Then "Jam In The Pocket", where Phil uses some of his recognisable "electric" bits over a rhythm loop. "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" of all tunes has an "in your living room" feel, with a humorously rude tuba blast lo finish with. It's a must for every devoted fan and no doubt useful for the aspiring guitarist.
