Phil Keaggy requires no introduction aside from saying that he is one of the most respected guitarists in the world, being cited by many as an influence. This album shows the veteran has not lost his touch. 'Illumination' was recorded with Austin, Texas-based producer Rex Paul who has worked with numerous rock and country acts. Phil's solid chord work, brief, perfectly in place solos (sometimes overlaid) - always leaving you wanting more - fast acoustic runs (with some nice 12-string work) all make for a sumptuous listening experience. The style is pop/rock of the '80s and '90s - Kansas, Journey, Gordon Giltrap, Snowy White, Joe Satriani and so forth. Vocally, Phil's warm tenor resembles McCartney while lyrically the songs come across as Biblical quotes spliced together more than any expounded theme. They are not the most imaginative lyrics you'll hear, but the guitar work is. Every time I think Phil has peaked, I find he hasn't. If you're a young guitarist and haven't yet heard Phil Keaggy then you need to.
