I've long been fascinated by the music and ministry of Phil and Brenda Nicholas. They really do have a little niche all to themselves. As I said, their musical recipe is unique. Take one part hollering, Pentecostal black church fervour with enough lung power to upset the saints. Add to the mix one part R&B gospel with a slapped bass groove which make Level 42 look like funkster wannabees. Then mix in one part showbiz corn, full of gushing monologues and OTT intros which would leave some less sensitive souls rushing for the bathroom. This extraordinary mixture of raggedy storefront church honesty and Rolex watch preach flim flam is not to everybody's taste that's for sure, but on this, their best set for years, they turn in some soulful ballads, funky romps and continually evoke the name of Jesus.
