Young trumpeter and cornettist Philip Cobb has an impressive pedigree. His father Stephen (who conducts here) is bandmaster of the Salvation Army's International Staff Band. Philip plays in that band; he has played in leading international youth ensembles and won prizes for his musicianship. On this debut solo recording, he enjoys brilliant accompaniment from the Cory Band, organist Ben Horden and Robert Childs on euphonium. The programme is a mixture of baroque classical works and typical Salvationist material. So familiar hymns are rearranged, and pieces unique to the Army are also present. Philip's playing is by turn gentle, lyrical, exuberant, witty and - where necessary - solemn. If you want a fine representation of what today's successors to William Booth play, beyond the stereotyped image of carols in the High Street, this CD will provide you with an excellent taster. And if Philip is this good this young, heaven knows what his talent will achieve as he matures further.
