The magnificently monikered Pinkeye D'gekko have apparently been around on the US club scene a goodly while. In recent times they've been gigging with Lynyrd Skynyrd and like that more famous group play a kind of blue collar boogie music which some would call dated but fans would use the phrase "timeless." Most of the songs here were penned by the band's leader Steve Richards Mahoney and have plenty of bluesy guitar, power house Hammond organ and a tight, bright rhythm section. Mahoney's compositions are often full of enigmatic imagery (eg, "Call Me Adolf During War Time" offers the verse, "At the gates of Hell's no more kind/Occupation way of life/Call me Adolf during war time/Take me home to meet the wife.") No, I'm not sure I get it either! Mike Rimmer played a track from this album recently, a full on boogie version of "Slow Down" but as I'm old enough to remember the Larry Williams rock and roll original, I wasn't particularly impressed. All in all, an intriguing album from an honest band ploughing their furrow in the mainstream arena.
