We've heard from the mother of gospel's first family and now it's time to have a listen to Pop Winans, the daddy of them all! Again produced by Cedric and) Victor Caldwell, Pop strips it down and using The Winans and Winans Phase 2 as a backing vocal group, this has an old fashioned gospel quartet vibe about it, Less obvious traditional material has been chosen and it's Pop's personality that really makes this! The album includes a few interludes where Pop lets off on a number of topics which just adds to the fun. Musically, a lot of this is a simple formula - find a groove and let loose vocally, playing off the tight backing vocal arrangements from his sons and grandsons. This is old-time but it's sharpened up by some contemporary production values. Standouts include the old chestnuts "This Train" and "Pass Me Not" as well as a new 8eBe Winans song "Right Here Waiting" with a srnokin1 sultry bass line, some wailing sax and a testifyin' Pop Winans. Just great!
