Kingsway's latest brand for instrumental worship is this, Quiet Moments With God, a descendant of the "Praise Him On The Cello/Panpipes/Kazoo" series. The chosen instrument here is jazz guitar, played with a gentle touch and great skill by well regarded UK session man Matt Weeks, backed by professional but unimposing arrangements by Tim Oliver, veteran of the superb Celtic Expressions Of Worship series. The choice of tunes is eclectic, favouring brand new choruses over arguably better known ones. So the likes of "Everything I Have Comes From You", "All Around Your Throne" and "Take This Bread" (all published just last year) far outweigh the traditional instrumental fare on offer, such as "We Bow Down" and "All Heaven Declares". Then again, the times they are a-changin' and it's good that Kingsway isn't standing still. One effect of this development is to make listening to 'Jazz Guitar' a much mellower, "background music" experience than a deliberately meditative one (for me at least). Perfect, however, for a sophisticated dinner party or a late-night coffee with the house group.
