Fans of funk music will recognise immediately the name Troutman. The late Roger Troutman was a genius funkateer with the incredible band Zapp who pioneered a space cadet funk featuring heavily treated vocoder vocals. In recent months, former Zapp member Shirley Murdock has released a gospel album and now Roger's nephew Rufus Troutman has recorded an aptly titled uncompromising debut album, ensuring that the legacy of cool music continues. Rufus himself guested a while back on the last John P Kee live album but here he has an opportunity to really shine. In these days of fairly predictable R&B, it's cool to go back to some genuine funk grooves and 'No Compromise' is packed to the rafters with them! There's the celebration of "What A Friend" and the opening hit of "Work It Out" and "New Life" which unmistakably introduce the listener to the fact that this is a gospel album! Then there are some breaks in the tempo to give you a chance to catch your breath. "Amazing Grace" is gorgeous and a tribute to uncle Roger whilst the soulful title cut is a delicious ballad. Fine funk and a strong message make this a special album.
