Gazing upon the rather generic cover my heart sank a little to think of the mediocrity it must contain. My prejudices were not dispelled once the music began, slide guitar heralding one of the most unfashionable forms of music - country. Shame on me. Although not a fan of the genre, even a cynic like me can be won over by commitment and talent. Original songs sit alongside slightly more well established songs, such as "Seek Ye First". All are worked (or reworked) with sensitivity and creativity. The result is both satisfying and spiritual. And indeed, ifi this can be the effect on one who desperately wanted to dislike this album, how much more will one like it who can appreciate country music more than I?
Tony, Paul Davis sent in a review:
Plainly covered and unpretentiously packaged inside, this is an older ear-catching endeavour that deserves some praise at times. William winsomely displays a most likeable vocal styling and delivery on 11 generally story-based sonnets of "up and down" themes and tempos performed in a Irish-tenor manner. The album opens with the classic Hank Williams "Book Of Life"' which instantly inspires followed by Karen Lafferty's "Seek Ye First" and other no-nonsense lyrics. It's funny how all these songs lend themselves to the style! The album closes with the Statesman's frightening "Sorry I Never Knew You" concluding '70s recall!
