Philadelphia's Eddie is one of the longest working soul singers on today's scene. "Hey There Lonely Girl" was a mega hit for the pioneer of romance, as he is otherwise known, back in the '60s. An ordained Baptist minister, after a long absence from the music racks, Eddie has here released his second gospel album. "Thank You For Saving Me" is an upbeat track reminiscent of the soul of the 1980s. It's a beautiful song on which Eddie thanks the Lord for his salvation. "Old Rugged Cross" is Mr Holman's version of the classic hymn and like all the other tracks on this album demonstrates that Eddie's extraordinary high falsetto is still one of the most memorable sounds in the whole of popular music. Elsewhere the material ranges from the self-penned "United" to another hymn evergreen "How Great Thou Art" and (rather out of place) a smooth rendition of the "Theme From Love Story". You'd be hard pressed to find anyone that can sing like this seasoned veteran so it's a shame that some of the material and the production on 'Love Story' is not up to the same quality as the voice. With a decent recording budget and a sympathetic producer Eddie has the chops to make a gospel classic. But this isn't it.
