Perhaps we could liken this collection to a cathedral. We enter through a "Salve Regina" for double choir that has some affinities with Tavener or Pärt, even down to the tintinnabulation that reminds us of the bells that hang high above us in the tower that is represented by an imposing "Improperia" for double choir and semi-chorus; there are three spirituals and two Christmas carols that are like the side-chapels that are visited only on special occasions and, at the centre of it all, a "Missa Brevis" that makes it clear that the reason for writing liturgical music or building a cathedral are one and the same: to bring glory to God. There is so much to consider that I am conscious I am failing to do any of it justice. Let it be said that all the performers are first class: John Harle on soprano saxophone, the soprano Susan Hamilton, James McVinnie and Matthew Owens on organ, the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and the vocal group Laudibus. Mike Brewer conducts and all are first recordings and were made in the presence of the composer who must be delighted with the result.
