As a huge fan of Ricky Skaggs, I put this CD on wondering where his music was now taking him as I have to confess that I did not like his recent gospel album 'Mosaic' despite its critical acclaim. However I am delighted to report that Ricky and his brilliant band Kentucky Thunder are now back to what they do best, recreating in a bluegrass style many of Ricky's biggest country hits from his golden period of the 1980s. This CD has resurrected 14 oldies and given them a timeless bluegrass makeover. The songs "Heartbroke", "Highway 40 Blues", "Country Boy" and a country classic from the 1950s: "I Wouldn't Change You If I Could" all sound delightfully fresh. If I had to pick a couple of favourites it would be the very catchy "Cajun Moon" and the Bill Monroe bluegrass classic "Uncle Pen". This fantastic album concludes with the very moving gospel tune "Somebody's Prayin'". Bluegrass purists might jib a little bit at the use of some electric and steel guitar, but if you want to hear great lyrics, outstanding musicianship and top vocals this is as good as it gets. As far I am concerned, Ricky's back at his brilliant best.
