One of the pleasures that I had on a recent trip to Australia (work, you understand, some international broadcasting conference thing) was meeting and talking to this Victoria-based songbird, who has a singing pedigree that stretches back to when she was just a lass of tender years – there’s a photo in the CD sleeve of a cute toddler with a toy piano to prove it. Her parents’ insistence that she should have singing lessons as well as piano lessons has paid off, her songs and her singing are of equally good quality, and this 2001 release contains 10 of her own compositions. Whilst the playing time is a bit stingy at just over 36 minutes, it’s still a good listen, her style is an interesting mix of the bluesy and the operatic, as witness the opening song “If God”, which is probably her Italian ancestry making its presence felt; but my favourite is the third track “More Than Icecream”, reflecting on all the different meanings there are in the English language for the word love. You’ll have to go to Roma’s website to get this, but I think you’ll find it worth the effort.
