Although the subtitle tells us that this CD is of "organ music for Christmas" this is not music to play in the background while you roast chestnuts on an open fire and unwrap your presents. This is music that demands and deserves your concentration as you contemplate the miracle of the Incarnation, something that can and should be done more than just once a year. The featured composer is Olivier Messiaen with "Puer Natus Est Nobis" from 'Le Livre Du Saint Sacrament' and "La Nativité Du Seigneur", nine meditations on the birth of Christ, so easy listening this is not. We are also given two fantasies on hymn tunes by Kenneth Leighton, the tunes in question being Helmsley ("Lo, He Comes With Clouds Descending") and Veni, Emmanuel ("O Come, O Come, Emmanuel") and pieces by Andrzej Krzanowski and Jonathan Harvey. The recording was made in June 2005 and was Rupert Jeffcoat's swansong before taking up his new post in Brisbane. Coventry's loss is Queensland's gain as Jeffcoat is a very talented musician. If you have an interest in contemporary organ music or virtuoso playing this CD is worth looking for. If you want a traditional church Christmas then go to church.
