After the catchy opener "Mountains" - released prior to his album as a single - I thought I was really going to enjoy this set from the Oklahoma-based neo soul singer. But despite a great voice, a sinuous soulful tenor that could give the D'Angelos and John Legends a run for their money, and occasional keyboard flourishes that overcome a low budget production, too often the integration of hip-hop and old school soul makes for an uneasy musical marriage. Also some of the melody lines simply aren't strong enough to sustain interest. Sean has an unusual background, a one-time Air Force Staff Sergeant whose grandparents had introduced him to the delights of the Soul Stirrers, Dixie Hummingbirds, et al and who grew up listening to The Roots and Anthony Hamilton. But despite these commendable influences and a great voice, Sean needs stronger material and production if he's to break through into the upper echelons of R&B gospel.
