Reviewed by Paul Ewbank Mumbai-based worship leader Sheldon Bangera appeared on the international radar in 2013 when he realeased 'Nachoonga', an album of classic western worship songs he recorded with Worship Central India and sung in Hindi. His 2015 follow up 'Raaja Hai Mahaan' (meaning 'Our King Is So Great') is a real breath of fresh air and a stunning new voice in modern worship. Bangera sings nine of these songs in Hindi and three in English, and while the language barrier will probably limit this album's appeal in the UK, there's no denying his talents both vocally and in songwriting. The music is an enthralling mix of east and west featuring traditional Indian instruments alongside the usual guitars, drums and piano. Bangera's voice is confident, natural and unique, and even if you can't understand what he's singing, his melodies are catchy and his joy at praising God is palpable. "Jai Jai Naam" and the title track both feature a distinctly Indian flavour, while the upbeat, festive "Pause (God You Are Great)" is probably the best of the English tracks. Other highlights include "Aye Mere Maan", an uplifting Tim Hughes style soft rock ballad featuring a gorgeous violin solo to boot, and "Stuti, Gao Stuti", which is driven by heavy, distorted guitars and dramatic piano. Bangera's goal for his music is, in his own words, to help people all over the world encounter God, and on 'Raaja Hai Mahaan' he demonstrates the potential to do just that.

Fresh from selling over 7500 copies of his last album ‘Nachoonga’ world wide, internationally celebrated Indian singer-songwriter, musician and producer Sheldon Bangera is back with new album Raaja Hai Mahaan out now. His first album released through Integrity Music, Raaja Hai Mahaan documents both Sheldon’s personal spiritual life and also that of the Indian church in 2015. Sheldon says, “This album is a reflection of many seasons with God, some of them we’ve been singing for the last 5 - 7 years. They mark personal experiences and reflections of what God is doing with the church. They are songs of hope and I feel like the whole aesthetic of it will be a blessing to many, even people who don’t understand or speak Hindi.” Sonically an “east meets west” vista, blending traditional Indian sounds with a western worship flavour, Raaja Hai Mahaan is a celebration of cultural diversity at its finest. Inspired by a good friend in England, Sheldon decided to write what he describes as a ‘new part of God’s bigger picture of the east meeting the west in worship.’
