Still yet to establish herself as a major name in the USA, this 1997 debut was produced by Poor Old Lu's Aaron Sprinkle. Sherri was playing live and writing songs for a number of years before she ever considered trying to get a record deal, consequently this set of songs have enjoyed time to mature and it shows! Sensitive songwriting combines with an acoustic feel, delicate melodies and the perfect voice. It's easy to get into Youngward's songs because she is such a fine storyteller and observer. An obvious key song is the poignant "Broadway" inspired by Matthew 25 and a walk down a street observing the pain of the people she saw mixed with regret that she didn't do more. Powerful! "Underneath It All" is reminiscent of All About Eve - a ballad about eternity with a stripped down sound and floating vocal. "Wisdom Waits" is a more uptempo rootsy affair whilst "Restore My Soul" is an extremely moving atmospheric psalm-like prayer complete with plaintive cello. Simply beautiful. From the intense opener "Beyond These Skies" through to the simplicity of the closing tune "Peace", this album is a rootsy pop record that will appeal to anyone who wants intelligent, thought provoking songs and a singer who isn't afraid to be human while stretching to touch the divine. Near perfect!
